Upon arrival, officers made contact with Eads, the apartment resident. Eads reportedly stated there was no dispute and that his girlfriend was asleep inside. Eads allegedly voluntarily allowed officers into the apartment and led them to a back bedroom where the woman was lying in bed.

The affidavit states that the couple immediately began to argue, prompting officers to speak with the female separately outside the residence. The woman reportedly told Sgt. Gerkin stated that Eads was highly intoxicated and had been drinking throughout the morning. She indicated that she wanted to leave the apartment to go to her nearby residence, but Eads had taken her keys and purse to prevent her from leaving. The woman stated that she lay in bed to wait for Eads to leave so she could sneak out.

When officers re-entered the apartment to allow the female to gather her belongings, Eads, who had been separated in another room with another officer, allegedly returned to the bedroom and began grabbing and hugging the woman. Despite verbal commands from officers to step back and remain separated, Eads reportedly refused to comply.

The affidavit further states that when an officer attempted to physically separate Eads and the woman by grabbing Eads’ arm, he forcefully pulled away. Sgt. Gerkin intervened, and both officers attempted to gain control of Eads’ arms. Eads allegedly resisted their efforts and ignored multiple verbal commands to stop. Eventually, officers took Eads to the ground and placed him in custody.

Following his detention, Eads was transported to IU Health for medical clearance due to his high level of intoxication. A preliminary breath test reportedly yielded a result of 0.245. After being medically cleared, Eads was transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
