SCOTTSBURG – A Scott County woman has been arrested. She faces multiple felony charges after an investigation revealed she was allegedly stealing jewelry and cash from homes she was hired to clean. The Scott County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Rachelle R. Smith, of Scottsburg, in connection with the thefts and also on drug-related charges.

The investigation began on May 2 when a Scott County deputy was called to a residence where homeowners reported missing cash and jewelry. The homeowners noticed the missing items after hiring a cleaning company in April.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the initial investigation quickly led the deputy to the stolen items, and Smith was identified as the primary suspect. Subsequently, a search warrant was executed at Smith’s Scottsburg residence, which resulted in the discovery of additional stolen jewelry and drugs.
The Scott County Sheriff’s Office believes that Smith is linked to several other thefts throughout southern Indiana, all occurring at residences where she was employed as a cleaner.
