BEDFORD – A Mitchell man has been charged with battery resulting in moderate bodily injury following an incident in Bedford. According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Bedford Police Officer Zakry E. Brooking, John Thomas Nunn, 42, is accused of assaulting another man on April 27, 2025.

At approximately 12:24 a.m. on Sunday, April 27th, officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of 27th Street to an apartment in response to a report of a fight. The male complainant was found bleeding heavily and leaning against his truck. He told officers that John Thomas “JT” Nunn had yelled for him to come outside, accusing him of stealing Nunn’s mother’s purse. He stated that Nunn then punched him in the face, causing pain, and believed Nunn was using brass knuckles.
The affidavit states that a security camera captured footage of the incident. The video showed a white SUV driving past the victim’s residence multiple times before stopping. A white male, identified as Nunn, was seen yelling from the vehicle. Nunn exited the SUV, initially walking towards the victim’s truck, but returned to the truck before approaching the victim. The video shows Nunn allegedly flailing his arms and taking a fighting stance as he approached the victim, who was backing away.
The incident continued off-camera, but the video showed an older female exiting the SUV and approaching the two men. Subsequently, the male victim is seen running and stumbling back into view with Nunn allegedly chasing him. Nunn then pushed the victim to the ground and punched him once in the face while he was down. Another white female then exited the vehicle and intervened, pulling the victim away. All parties then left the scene in the SUV.
The male victim was treated at the scene by IU Health EMTs and advised to seek further medical attention, which he said he would do himself. He signed a battery affidavit indicating his intent to press charges. While the victim suspected Nunn used brass knuckles, this could not be confirmed from the video footage.
Officers collected DNA samples from the victim and swabs from puddles of a red substance at the scene.
Based on the investigation, the information was sent to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office, and a warrant was issued for Nunn’s arrest. He was detained on Monday, May 12.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This article is based on the information provided in the Probable Cause Affidavit and does not represent a final determination of guilt or innocence.
