Major oatmeal distributor recalls thousands of pounds of oats over plastic risk

INDIANA – A major distributor has initiated a significant recall of oatmeal over concerns about potential plastic contamination, according to documents released by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Grain Millers, a company claiming to be the largest organic oat processor globally and responsible for a quarter of North America’s oat supply, recalled 63,000 pounds of its product.

The recall involves 20 of the company’s 1,800-pound totes of Regular Rolled Oats #5 and 17 of its 1,600-pound totes of Quick Rolled Oats #21. FDA records indicate that these potentially contaminated oats were shipped to locations in California and Indiana.

The FDA classified this as a Class II recall, which signifies that the agency believes the affected oats could potentially cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.

Interestingly, the FDA’s enforcement report notes that the voluntary recall was terminated on April 25th. This suggests that the company has already taken steps to address the issue and remove the affected products from distribution.

Grain Millers, based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, states on its website that its regular rolled oats are used for a variety of breakfast, cooking, and baking purposes. The quick rolled oats are commonly found in convenient pouch oatmeal products.

Despite the scale of the recall and the potential for contamination, Grain Millers did not issue a press release to inform the public directly. The company also did not immediately respond to a request for comment made on April 27th regarding the recall.

Consumers who may have purchased or come into contact with large quantities of rolled oats, particularly those in California and Indiana, should be aware of this recall. While the risk of serious health issues is deemed remote by the FDA, the presence of plastic in food products is a concern. Individuals or businesses with questions about specific oat products should likely contact Grain Millers directly for more information.
