Hearse leads police on pursuit through Lafayette

TIPPECANOE CO. – On Friday, April 11, just after 10:00 p.m., Trooper Miramontes was patrolling the area of Sagamore Parkway near Kossuth Street when he observed a hearse displaying flashing red and white lights traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Sagamore Parkway.

Before reaching South Street, the hearse crossed back into the northbound lanes. At the Sagamore Parkway and South Street intersection, the hearse disregarded a red traffic light and continued northbound. Trooper Miramontes attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle failed to stop and continued traveling north on Sagamore Parkway.

The pursuit continued from Lafayette into West Lafayette, where the suspect turned onto Sachem Boulevard. The hearse eventually stopped at the intersection of Sachem Boulevard and Sachem Court. Upon stopping, the driver initially ignored verbal commands from troopers before being safely taken into custody.

The driver, Herman Gray, 39, of Terre Haute, was transported to the Tippecanoe County Jail on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, resisting arrest, and driving a car on a permit.
