BEDFORD – Bedford North Lawrence’s late season debut was an Indiana Jones moment. It was a short round.

Scheduled to battle nemesis Bloomington South for a full 18 holes on Thursday at Otis Park, the Stars had to cut the day in half when lightning and incoming weather forced the players to scramble for cover. And since the event included a shotgun start, with assigned groups starting on different tees, all the competitors did not complete the same nine holes.

So with as little improvisation, the final team scores reflected the standings relative to par. The Panthers, with consistent scoring from the top of the lineup, posted a four-player total of plus-7, while the Stars carded plus-14.

South had three scorers (Colton Watson, Carson Gady and Aidan Bomba) at one-over through nine holes.

BNL had solid numbers, just a little higher. Tyler Bellush and Evan Tillett set the pace at 3-over.

BNL’s Drew McKee blasts his ball out of a bunker en route to a birdie on the fifth hole.

“We had some bad holes, and some big numbers we talk about not having, but there were guys who bounced back and redeemed those big numbers,” BNL coach Trey Turner said. “I was excited to see that. We’ll take red numbers all day, but we want to stay away from a six or seven on the scorecard. We’re trying to get more consistent.”

The Stars had plenty of red sprinkled on their cards. Drew McKee went birdie-eagle on the front-nine par-fives while totaling 4-over. Hudson Martin had birdies on holes 6, 7 and 9 yet still posted 4-over. Coleson Stiles birdied the second en route to 4-over. Once they figure out how to eliminate the big mistake, they will improve rapidly. Considering BNL had to wait five extra days to start the season, it’s a good foundation for the next two months.

“We were excited to get to play,” Turner said. “We had to wait a little bit, so it was good to get out here – even if it was only nine holes – to get some play under our belt and some experience.

”We have to figure out, through scoring and qualifying, how we will do. We have to find a top five by sectional time. Hopefully we have guys step up and be ready to play.”

BNL will compete in the Floyd Central Invitational on Saturday.
