BLOOMINGTON—Days after severe storms and heavy rainfall swept through the region, Monroe County continues to deal with the significant impact of flooding. Floodwaters initially forced the closure of nearly a dozen roads across the county, disrupting residents and commuters.
The Monroe County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) reported that while some roadways are beginning to reopen, eleven county roads remain closed due to standing water. EMA officials noted that these remaining closures are primarily on county roads in low-lying areas near bodies of water with a history of flooding.
The impact extends to Lake Monroe, where the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has reported that the water elevation has risen to over twelve feet above the normal pool level. This significant increase has rendered several park areas surrounding the reservoir inaccessible.
Despite the widespread road closures and high water levels, the EMA stated that no damage directly caused by the flooding has been reported to their office thus far. However, the agency is actively communicating with local fire departments, urging them to report any flood-related issues they encounter.
Monroe County has provided resources for residents navigating the aftermath to stay informed about road conditions. Drivers can access the county’s online Road Closure Viewer for real-time closures, detours, and restrictions updates. A comprehensive list of closures is also available online.
