East Fork of White River near Bedford expected to reach flood stage

BEDFORD – Residents along the East Fork White River near the Bedford Boat Club should prepare for major flooding. The river is predicted to continue rising through Wednesday afternoon, and according to the National Water Prediction Service (NWPS) monitor, it is expected to crest at just over 33 feet.

Lawrence County Sheriff Greg Day asked motorists to use caution while driving, as several roadways remain flooded from the heavy rains.

“If water is across the road, do NOT attempt to cross it,” added Sheriff Day. ” Also, do NOT drive around “road closed” signs. This morning’s foggy conditions have reduced visibility and are contributing to the dangers. Along with Indiana Conservation Officers and local fire departments, we have responded to multiple water rescues this morning with vehicles and people stuck in flooded roadways. Please use caution!”

The NWPS website indicates that this section of the East Fork White River’s major flood stage is 32 feet. This means significant inundation of low-lying areas, roads, and property near the river is anticipated.

According to Lawrence County Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer, at 32.5 feet, flooding affects more than 40 homes and over 100 Lawrence County residents in Fort Ritner, the Fort Ritner Museum, White River Cabins near Williams, low areas of East Oolitic, and locally known Chase Riffle and Palestine.

Flooding in East Oolitic

While the river is expected to reach its peak mid-week, the NWPS forecasts a return to normal water levels sometime next week.

The NWPS reports that the most severe flood on record for the East Fork White River in this area occurred in March 1913. During that devastating event, the river reached an astonishing 47.5 feet. Records indicate that at that level, floodwaters would have reached the ceiling of the Bedford Boat Club, highlighting the potential for significant impact with the currently predicted crest.
