BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested and jailed on Friday afternoon after allegedly causing a disturbance at an apartment complex on Industrial Park Drive.

On Friday, April 4, at approximately 4:31 p.m., Officers Hatton and Sarah Haluda were dispatched to the apartment complex about a report of Rathburn being intoxicated, yelling, and running through the hallways while banging and kicking on apartment doors in an apparent attempt to gain entry.

Upon arrival, officers heard no disturbance and could not find Rathburn at his apartment. However, they were dispatched back to the exact location at approximately 4:34 p.m. for a similar complaint of Rathburn running through the upstairs hallways, yelling, and banging on doors.

Upon returning, the officers reported hearing Rathburn upstairs. The residents confirmed his disruptive behavior. While searching the hallways, a resident informed officers that Rathburn may have entered an apartment after throwing a dumbbell at their door.

Officers located Rathburn inside the apartment. When ordered to stand up, Rathburn allegedly refused to comply and remained seated. As officers attempted to assist him in standing and placing him in handcuffs, he reportedly began pulling away. Once handcuffed, Rathburn allegedly refused to walk with officers out of the apartment complex, making his body go limp and sitting on the floor. He was subsequently escorted and placed in a patrol vehicle.

Officers observed that Rathburn had soiled clothing, glassy eyes, slurred speech, and the odor of alcohol emanating from his breath. The affidavit also notes that there were multiple 911 calls made between 3:17 p.m. and 4:18 p.m. regarding Rathburn’s behavior in the hallways. Additionally, Sergeant Crulo had reportedly advised Rathburn after the initial calls that he would be arrested for disorderly conduct if his behavior continued.

Rathburn was transported to IU Health for medical clearance before being lodged in the Lawrence County Jail.

Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
