SCOTT CO. – A Vallonia man has been charged with attempted murder and other offenses following a stabbing incident on February 27th that left a Vallonia woman critically injured.

Nicholas Braydan Atwood of Vallonia was arrested and faces a Level 1 felony charge of attempted murder, a Level 3 charge of aggravated battery, two Level 5 charges of battery by means of a deadly weapon and serious bodily injury, and a Class A misdemeanor charge of theft.
According to a probable cause affidavit signed by Indiana State Police Detective Brian Busick, the Scott County Sheriff’s Department responded to the incident on York Road, west of Austin. Deputies found Atwood and a female outside of a KIA Optima. Both individuals had stab wounds.
The scene was on York Road, west of Thomastown Road in Austin. Investigators found blood both inside and outside of the vehicle.
Edwards sustained multiple stab wounds, including three to the neck, one to her right hand, and several others to her torso and right inner forearm, according to court records. She was transported to University of Louisville Hospital for emergency surgery and was listed in critical condition.
Detective Busick was unable to interview Edwards due to the severity of her injuries, but he was able to review a 911 call made to Scott County dispatchers. During the call, a female voice, believed to be Edwards, can be heard saying, “He stabbed me, please help,” and also identifying “Nick Atwood.”
Atwood sustained injuries to his hands and was transported to Scott Memorial Hospital for treatment before being arrested, according to the probable cause. He is being held on a $1 million bond set by Scott Circuit Court Judge Jason Mount.
Atwood’s initial hearing was at 11 a.m. Friday in Scott Circuit Court.
When questioned by Detective Busick at the hospital, Atwood stated “attorney” and invoked his Fifth Amendment rights.
Court documents indicate that Atwood and Edwards had an on-and-off relationship and had recently reconciled.
Edwards lived with her grandfather in Vallonia. Investigators later determined that the filet knife used in the stabbing was stolen. The knife, with a bent blade, was recovered at the scene.
The Scott County Sheriff’s Department and Austin Police Department initially investigated the incident before joined by the Indiana State Police.
