HELTONVILLE— A Heltonville man was arrested late Friday night on multiple charges, including operating while intoxicated and driving while suspended, following a reported violation of a protection order.
According to the Indiana State Police, Trooper Ben Burris responded to a dispatch call at approximately 10:36 p.m. on February 28 regarding a protection order violation in the 6000 block of Bartlettsville Road in Lawrence County. Upon arrival, Burris spoke with a female who stated that she had a protection order against Cody Reeves, 30, and believed he had been dropped off on her property earlier by a red truck. She also reported a similar incident had occurred the previous night.

While Burris and Trooper Crane were checking the property, a red Chevrolet truck drove past the female’s residence on Bartlettsville Road, turned around in a driveway, and then passed by again. Officers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, a 1988 red Chevrolet truck with Indiana In God We Trust license plate BYQ158, and identified the driver as Reeves.
Reeves denied being on the caller’s property. However, officers detected the odor of alcohol, and Reeves exhibited bloodshot eyes. He also admitted to smoking marijuana before driving.
Field sobriety tests indicated signs of impairment, with Reeves displaying four of six clues on the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, three of eight clues on the walk-and-turn test, and three of four clues on the one-leg stand test. A portable breath test registered a blood alcohol content of .058. Reeves also submitted to a Sotoxa oral fluid analysis, which tested positive for cannabis, amphetamines, and methamphetamines. He consented to a blood draw, which was conducted at 12:02 a.m.
A background check through NCIC/IDACS revealed that Reeves’ driving status was suspended with a prior offense. Records indicated a previous judgment for driving while suspended on April 2, 2018, under case number 60C01-1804-IF-000179.
Reeves was transported to the Lawrence County Security Center and charged with the following offenses:
- Driving While Suspended – Prior
- Operating a Vehicle with a Schedule I/II Controlled Substance or Metabolite in the Blood
- Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated
The investigation remains ongoing. Those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
