INDIANA– The Indiana Department of Health has announced that flu activity in the state has reached its highest point this season, with 57 influenza-related deaths reported. Of the fatalities, 41 were individuals over the age of 65. No deaths have been reported in children under 4. Hospital and urgent care visits for influenza-like illnesses are also on the rise.
Influenza, a contagious respiratory illness, is spread through respiratory droplets. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle aches, headache, and fatigue. Vomiting and diarrhea can also occur, especially in children.
High-risk groups for serious complications include those 65 and older, young children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic health conditions.
Health officials note that flu season typically peaks between December and February. In response to the increased activity, hospitals and healthcare facilities may implement stricter visitor restrictions. Individuals should check with specific facilities for their current guidelines.
While pharmacies offer tests for both flu and COVID-19, testing for Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) requires a visit to an urgent care facility or hospital.
