Traffic stop leads to drug and firearm arrests in Angola

ANGOLA – Two individuals were arrested following a traffic stop in Steuben County on February 9, 2025. At approximately 6:17 p.m., Indiana State Police Troopers stopped a gray Ford truck for speeding on US 20 near CR 200 W, near Angola. The driver was identified as Anthony Steel, 35, of Fort Wayne.

During the stop, a K-9 unit was called to the scene to conduct a check of the vehicle. The investigation resulted in the discovery of a stolen handgun and a white powdery substance believed to be methamphetamine. Steel and his passenger, Lita Smoker, 20, of Angola, were both arrested and transported to the Steuben County Jail. While at the jail, a further search of Steel revealed additional suspected methamphetamine in his possession.

All evidence was seized and sent to the Indiana State Police Regional Lab for testing.

Steel was arrested on charges of possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a Level 4 felony; theft of a firearm, a Level 5 felony; trafficking contraband into a correctional facility, a Level 5 felony; possession of methamphetamine (Level 6 Felony), and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

Smoker was arrested on charges of dealing methamphetamine, a Level 2 felony; possession of methamphetamine, a Level 3 felony; theft of a firearm, a Level 5 felony; possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

Those facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
