Traffic Stop Leads to Gun Charges

(WARREN CO.) – On Sunday, an Indiana State Trooper was patrolling on State Road 63 near Oak Drive when he stopped a 1999 Toyota Camry for speeding.

The vehicle was traveling 75 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour zone.

When the trooper approached the vehicle, he detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

The driver, 36-year-old Anthony Atkins, of Chicago, Illinois, gave the trooper permission to search the vehicle.

The trooper located multiple packages containing THC edible candy and marijuana. The trooper also found Atkins was carrying a handgun in his waistband. The serial numbers were removed from the gun.

During the traffic stop, the trooper said Atkins was showing signs of being under the influence of a controlled substance. Atkins was transported to a local hospital for a blood draw.

Atkins was arrested and transported to Warren County Jail on charges of possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, possession of a firearm with an altered identification number, possession of a handgun without a permit, dealing marijuana, possession of marijuana, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated on a controlled substance
