Obituary: John David Hert

March 23, 1930 – December 21, 2020

John D. Hert, 90, passed away on December 21, 2020, after enduring complications from the Corona Virus.

He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, wife, and daughters-in-law (Tom). He was born to Vida (Davis) Hert and Allen Hert on March 23, 1930, in Oolitic, Indiana, where he spent his childhood and youth with siblings, Allen, Jr., Mary McCrary, and Phillip.

In his early twenties, he left his hometown to serve overseas in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a radio operator. Soon after he returned from the war, he was reacquainted with Rosalyn Hampton Hert with whom he shared an adventurous marriage for over 60 years. They raised three children: Michael (Liz) Hert, Thomas Hert, and Jennifer (Paul) Spoelhof. John and Rose built three houses together in Bedford, Indiana before moving to Springville, Indiana.

John loved his property out in the country and he enjoyed spending time taking care of it. He was a fixer by nature, and nothing remained broken for long.

He was a career electrician working at Indiana University, Indiana Limestone, and retired from General Motors. He was a devoted Grandad and spent endless hours as the patient playmate to his grandchildren, Amy Hert, D. Brady Egan, J. Nicholas Egan, Abby Hert, Ali Rose Hert, Amberlyn
Griffen, Garrett Spoelhof, and Henri Spoelhof, and five great-grandchildren.

He was a quiet and thoughtful man who considered others in a polite and courteous manner. His family will dearly miss him and will celebrate the memory of his life when the weather is warmer and the world is a safer place for us all to gather.
