Christine Ann Smith – Bedford
June 8, 1954 – July 2, 2015
Christine Ann Smith (née Buchanan), of Bedford, Indiana, died, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, July 2, 2015. She was sixty-one years old.
Chris is survived by her husband of nearly thirty-five years, David A. Smith, of Bedford; her children, Patrick J. Smith and Emily C. Smith, both of Bedford; her sister, Alice G. Buchanan, of Bedford; and her brothers, Charles Buchanan, of Houston, Texas, and Richard A. Buchanan, of Oolitic. She is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Richard (Almira) Buchanan.
Chris was born on June 8, 1954, in Bedford, to Richard and Almira (“Ann”) Buchanan, and was raised there with her sister, Alice, and her brothers, Charles and Richard. Chris was graduated from Bedford High School in the Class of 1972. She then attended Indiana State University, in Terre Haute. While in Terre Haute, she met and fell in love with David Smith, and they were married on August 16, 1980. Chris worked at the Indiana University School of Dentistry while David attended law school in Indianapolis. Chris and David lived briefly in Indianapolis after David finished his studies, but they returned to Bedford in February 1985. In March 1986, Chris gave birth to a son, Patrick, and a daughter, Emily, followed in March 1987.
Chris was a staunch advocate for all children. She was elected to the North Lawrence School Board, and, after leaving office, she served for many years as the president of the North Lawrence Community Schools Foundation. Chris’s long hours of work contributed immeasurably to the college educations of many North Lawrence graduates. Chris also cared deeply about nature and animals, spending many hours gardening at her home in Bedford, tending her bird feeders, and caring for her three cats. Chris also loved traveling throughout Indiana, visiting antique stores and flower stands, and making new friends everywhere she went. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church for most of her life.
Chris passed on in Indianapolis after a short illness. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and sister; a caring friend; a creative artist; and a woman who believed in a better future for the young people of Lawrence County.
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church by the Reverend Father Richard Eldred on Friday, July 10, with private rites at the graveside to follow. Plans for a celebration of Chris’s life will be announced by her family in the near future.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be sent to the White River Humane Society.
