Road rage incident leads to arrest of Illinois man in Monroe County

SPENCER – On Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at approximately 3:18 p.m., members of the Indiana State Police assisted the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department with a reported road rage incident involving two vehicles on SR46 between Ellettsville and Spencer.

Sergeant Ian Portteus responded to the report of a vehicle, a 2023 Chevrolet Cruz, in the middle of the roadway with the driver of the vehicle reporting to have a medical issue. Prior to Sgt. Portteus’ arrival and the arrival of emergency medical personnel, an altercation was initiated between the occupants of a white pickup truck and the occupant of the Chevrolet Cruz. The white pickup truck left the scene before Portteus arrived at the scene.

First Sergeant Michael Wood was in the area and initiated a traffic stop with the white pickup truck on SR46, near the Concord Road intersection in Owen County. In the course of the investigation, First Sergeant Wood determined that a passenger, identified as Jesse E. Karrick, 28, of Illinois, was wanted on a warrant for burglary out of Illinois.

Following his investigation at the incident scene, Sgt. Portteus met with First Sergeant Wood and ultimately transported Karrick to the Owen County Jail where Karrick awaits extradition to Illinois. The road rage incident remains under investigation.
