Teens detained after being spotted rummaging through a vehicle on F Street

BEDFORD – On Saturday, May 20th, Bedford Police officers were called to the 1000 block of F Street after a report of unlawful entry to a motor vehicle. While en route the caller reported four people had broken into his vehicle and they were running east on 19th Street

When officers arrived they spotted a male waving his arm and pointing to the south alerting officers that those who had done the crime were at Lincoln Elementary School

As an officer approached the school he spotted a teen running north from the school parking lot and stopped the teen in the parking lot of Restoration Church at 504 19th Street.

After being detained the teen began to argue with the officer,

Three more teenagers were seen running southeast past the elementary school.

A female was spotted in a field behind Lincoln Elementary and she was detained.

Two other males were located running through a yard on East View Drive. An officer chased those teens and they were finally detained.

An officer spoke to the vehicle owner, who told them he was sitting in his living room in the 1000 block of F Street and heard the teens talking through an open window. They saw multiple teens inside and near the vehicle. The male ran outside and yelled at the teens and they took off running.

The owner believed nothing was taken from his vehicle.

The teens told police they had been walking down the street and decided to go “car hopping”. One of the teens admitted he didn’t want to do that but the next thing he realized someone had opened the car door and they were going through items in the vehicle.

The owner then came out of his home and began yelling and they took off running.

Another teen also said she just kept walking when one of the teens mentioned going “car hopping”. She took off running when the owner exited the house. She told investigators she was waving at the officer when he spotted her at the school and turned herself in.

Those two teens were released from custody to their parents and were not charged in the incident.

A 13-year-old male was detained on a charge of resisting arrest and a 14-year-old male was detained on charges of unlawful entry to a vehicle and resisting arrest. Both were released to their parents with a summons to appear in Juvenile Court on June 7, 2023, at 9 a.m.
