Chevy Traverse recalled for risk of exploding driver airbag inflator

INDIANA – GM has issued a product recall for certain units of the Chevy Traverse crossover due to an issue with the driver’s airbag inflator, which may explode during deployment as the result of a manufacturing defect.

Affected vehicles may be equipped with a driver’s airbag inflator that could explode during deployment.

if an airbag explodes during deployment, it could send metal shrapnel into the cabin, which may strike the driver or occupants, resulting in serious injury or possibly even death.

In order to fix this issue, certified GM technicians are instructed to replace the front-driver airbag module. The remedy components do not contain an inflator that was manufactured during the same time period as the potentially faulty components. The airbag replacement will be performed free of charge for the vehicle owner.

It’s estimated that there are 457,316 units of the 2014 – 2017 Chevy Traverse affected by this recall. Vehicles were produced between March of 2014 and March of 2017.
