INDIANA – From flowers and mushrooms to insects and snakes, the warm springtime weather in Indiana brings forth all kinds of creatures that can be both scary and beautiful alike.

This week is snake week and Department of Natural Resource officials will be focusing on some of Indiana’s most commonly misidentified snakes.

The “Black snake” is a common name that may represent four distinct Indiana species that are black in color:

The Black Racer, Black Kingsnake, the black phase Eastern Hognose snake, and the Gray Ratsnake (sometimes called the Black Ratsnake).

All of these snakes are non-venomous.
