BLOOMINGTON – On Monday, April 24, 2023, at 3:16 p.m. Monroe County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to an accident at the intersection of State Road 37 and Zikes Road.
The accident was reported as a head-on collision.
Upon arrival, deputies located two single-occupant vehicles with the drivers entrapped.
IU Health Lifeline Ambulance Service and Monroe Fire Protection administered emergency medical care on the scene, but it was later determined by the Monroe County Coroner’s Office the two drivers died on the scene from their injuries.
Monroe County Accident Reconstructionist was requested to process the scene. The responding deputies and the reconstructionist gathered statements from witnesses and other evidence. According to police the driver of the white 2012 Chevrolet Express van was traveling south on State Road 37 when it signaled to the right shoulder and then suddenly veered left, crossing the median.
As a result, the van collided head-on with a black 2015 Mercedes Sprinter van that was traveling north on State Road 37.
The names of the drivers will be withheld until the Monroe County Coroner’s Office completes its investigation and notifications.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office sends its condolences to all the families and community members affected by this tragedy.
