Obituary: Larry Edmund Haywood

February 16, 1942 – March 20, 2023

Larry Edmund Haywood, 81, of Bloomington, passed away at 4:40 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2023, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born February 16, 1942, in Greene County he was the son of Edward Earl and Christina Mae (Fuller) Haywood. He grew to manhood at the home place about 5 miles east of Bloomfield where he learned the value of hard work on the family farm.

He attended the country schools and graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1960, and always enjoyed the class reunion where he often was a special speaker to his classmates.

After graduation, he worked for and retired as Director of Transportation at Thomson (formerly RCA) in Bloomington.

It was such a blow to him when his daughter and grandson were killed in a car wreck in August of 1989 involving an impaired driver. He realized the need to tell others of the danger of driving under the influence. He spoke to thousands of people, not knowing how many lives he might have helped. He was recipient of the Golden Achievement Award, the highest award given by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, and the Haines Turner Award for contributions to justice that heal and restore the Monroe County community.

He was a very active member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where he was involved in all areas of the church, singing, worship leader, and even cooking for special occasions, and always willing to do anything that needed to be done.

After his retirement, he enjoyed working on houses to fix up to rent or sell and always welcomed a challenge that some might have thought was not worth the time, but turning them into something useful.

He enjoyed gardening and woodworking but most of all, spending time with his loving wife, Joyce Arthur Haywood, who feels she has lost the love of her life. He is also survived by Barry Leming, who was like a son to Larry and Joyce, his wife Ruth and their children, Jordy, Camila, and Andrea, his sisters, Leeda Glidden, Malinda Bell, and Mary (Daniel) Frye.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Christina Haywood, Joyce’s parents, Everett and Chloe Arthur, daughter, Tina Pruet, and grandson, Eddie Pruet.

Larry enjoyed life and serving his Master, Jesus Christ.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 23rd in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Rev. Richard Borden officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 3900 S. Snoddy Road, Bloomington, IN 47401.

The family would like to especially thank Dr. Bradford Bomba, Jr. for his kind and professional care.
