Washington County Sheriff’s Department and Salem Police Department host quarterly drive-thru drug drop

WASHINGTON CO. – The Washington County Sheriff’s Department and the Salem Police Department recently came together to host their quarterly drive-thru drug drop, as well as a food drive for a local food bank.

The event was a record day as officers collected 82 pounds of prescription medications, which were incinerated the same day. The sheriffs department started their program in the fall of 2019 and has since collected and incinerated 773 pounds of prescription medications.

Officers also collected 433 food items for the local food bank. Hunger knows no season and the local food bank is always accepting donations. The food bank is located on Water Street in Salem.

The Justice Center, which is attached to the sheriff’s department at 801 Jackson Street also has a Drug Drop collection box in the lobby where citizens can drop off their expired or unwanted prescription medications at any time. The Salem Police Department has a similar drug drop box in their lobby as well.

The next drive-thru drug drop/food drive will be held during the month of May.
