County reaches agreement with INDOT on eminent domain suit

BEDFORD – The Lawrence County Commissioners on Tuesday announced they have reached and finalized an agreement with the Indiana Department of Transportation in their eminent domain suit.

INDOT wanted to seize each of the courthouse square’s corner inlets and outlets and install new traffic devices.

County Attorney David Smith

According to County Attorney David Smith, the State of Indiana sued the county to obtain the right of way for all four of the courthouse inlets and outlets easements. The state wanted the easements for their road improvement project in downtown Bedford.

If the state had been granted the easements it would have caused the loss of 15 parking spaces.

Under the agreement, the county will remain the owner of the easements and INDOT will have the right to make repairs and maintain the stop lights. INDOT will only be allowed temporary blockage to those inlets and outlets while repairs or maintenance is being done to the stop lights.
