Suspect detained on Bloomington campus after warning of an armed person

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana University Police Department on Monday night detained a suspect after warning people to seek safe shelter on a report of an armed male.

The alert was issued around 9:50 p.m. stating the person was in the area of East 3rd Street and South Faculty Avenue.

“If you are on campus, trust your instincts and take safe shelter in the nearest available room,” the message read. “Lock doors if possible and remain in place until you receive a final IU Notify update or law enforcement gives you other instructions.”

The alert told anyone with information on the armed person to call 911.

A second alert at 10:09 p.m. Monday said police were looking for a male in a dark hoodie who was carrying a large object in the area of South Fess Avenue and East Third Street, near Beta Sigma Psi fraternity and the Henderson Parking Garage.

At 10:20 p.m.  IUPD tweeted a suspect was detained and it has been determined there is no threat to the Bloomington campus. Normal campus activity may resume, IUPD said.
