Police arrest man on drug charges while responding to report of an individual passed out in the street

BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested on Thursday, Feb. 23 on drug charges 

On Thursday, at 3:28 p.m. Bedford Police officers along with an IU Health ambulance crew were dispatched to 3018 Ted Jones Drive to Southview Terrace apartments after a report of a male who was passed out in the roadway.

When emergency crews arrived they could not locate the male.

A few minutes later, Bedford Police Dispatch reported the male had gone back into an apartment in the 2900 block of Ted Jones Drive. Officers went to the apartment and spoke to 45-year-old Richard Caswell. He told police that his friend was the one who passed out and he was now inside the apartment.

Caswell allowed police and IU Health EMS inside the apartment. Inside they found 30-year-old Daniel Holt who was sweating profusely and exhibited an inability to remain still, slurred speech, and red glassy eyes.

Police said Holt was under the influence of some kind of substance. He denied using or consuming any substances, citing that he had suffered a seizure, causing him to pass out. While speaking with Holt an officer observed an alcohol-cleansing wipe next to him, accompanied by an additional bloody wipe. Police say these wipes are commonly used in conjunction with intravenous drugs.

Also in the apartment were 20-year-old Sabrina Leggett and another elderly male in the apartment.

While Holt was being treated by IU Health EMS, Leggett was seated on a couch near Holt. Police say her speech was slurred and she exhibited signs of impairment. The officer watched Leggett lose and regain consciousness several times. She also drooled on herself several times. At one point, Holt asked Leggett to call his wife for him. While searching for Haley Holt’s contact information on her cellphone, Leggett lost consciousness and drooled down onto her cellphone.

Leggett was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital to receive treatment for fear of a possible overdose due to her use of illegal narcotics prior to officers’ arrival.

Lawrence County Probation was contacted because Caswell is currently on probation.

Lawrence County Probation arrived and advised Caswell of the terms of his probation. He agreed to a search of his living quarter. Caswell lived in the living room of the apartment.

Prior to conducting the search, Bedford Police Sergeant Bade utilized his K9 partner Zazu to conduct an open-air sniff inside the apartment. K9 Zazu alerted to the presence of illegal substances in the living room area.

During the search, police found a glass smoking device, a syringe loaded with fentanyl under a couch cushion, a plastic baggie containing marijuana, a gum container containing Gabapentin pills, a cut straw that tested positive for fentanyl, a plastic baggie containing fentanyl inside a cellphone case and a glass smoking pipe under the couch.

Caswell was detained and transported to the Bedford Police Department for processing and then to jail on charges of possession of a narcotic drug, possession of meth with a prior conviction, unlawful possession of a syringe, and possession of paraphernalia. possession of marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance.

After Leggett was cleared at the hospital she was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Holt refused medical treatment and was released by police.
