The Indiana Governor’s Workforce Cabinet discusses providing opportunities through education at Gaylor Electric

NOBLESVILLE – The Indiana Governor’s Workforce Cabinet conducted the first meeting of 2023 at Gaylor Electric this past Friday, February 17th.

The Governor’s Workforce Cabinet meets consistently to address Indiana’s current and future education and employment needs for individuals and employers. As an Employer Spotlight, Gaylor Electric hosted the Cabinet and discussed providing opportunities through education.

The meeting included a Region 5 snapshot, a Q&A session, a presentation from the Director of Gaylor University, Jeff Bryant, and a tour of Gaylor Electric’s Production and Innovation Center, and a group discussion.

The Cabinet concluded that they are making good progress in their efforts, including Region 5. The meeting conversation was focused on reviewing their improvements in helping employers find good talent, removing barriers, and providing a future for the workforce. The Cabinet also reviewed growth opportunities in Region 5 such as the READI Grant Investment, Innovation Mile, and the LEAP Innovation District.

Innovative things employers are doing to increase the unemployment rate were also a topic of focus. Jeff Bryant, Director of Gaylor University, gave a presentation on how Gaylor Electric is enriching and investing in people by providing opportunities through education and career pathways.

“The schools and businesses can’t do it by themselves. But when we work together, we can get things done,” said Bryant. Gaylor Electric possesses a different approach to education and lifelong learning. They have their own high school for at-risk teens who learn more effectively in a hands-on environment.

Their national internship program provides students the opportunity to invest in a career, not a job. The ABC Prep Academy holds a 100% job placement rate post-graduation.

“It’s not ‘I’m going to college, or I am becoming an electrician’,” said Bryant, in his commentary about the ABC Prep Academy. “It’s ‘I’m going to college AND becoming an electrician’.”

“It is an honor to accommodate the Indiana Governor’s Workforce Cabinet; as an Indiana State Representative and President & CEO of Gaylor Electric, I feel like my worlds are colliding,” said Chuck Goodrich. “Gaylor Electric has many innovative education programs that deserve to be recognized.”

The next meeting of the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2023, in Terre Haute/Region 7, hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

The Governor’s Workforce Cabinet (GWC) was formed to ensure a talent-driven education and workforce system by addressing the current and future needs of Indiana employers and individuals, strengthen Indiana’s economy by integrating state and federal resources, and provide strategic alignment for state agencies and organizations driving workforce, education, and economic development.

Members of the Cabinet are appointed by the Governor and include business and community leaders, education representatives from K-12 and postsecondary institutions, Indiana lawmakers, and experts from state agencies. Members are appointed by the Governor and represent Indiana’s 12 economic growth regions.
