After a successful inaugural year, the Ball State University Foundation today revealed the recipients of the University’s newest “Top 100 Student Awards.”

This annual award recognizes 100 outstanding junior and senior undergraduates who represent the spirit of Beneficence, Ball State’s institutional statue and icon that symbolizes the generosity of the five Ball brothers whose land donation to the State of Indiana allowed the University to flourish.

Beneficence, affectionately called “Benny,” is Ball State’s institutional icon. She symbolizes the generosity of the five Ball brothers whose land donation to the State of Indiana allowed Ball State to flourish. Following Ball State’s outdoor graduation ceremony, it is a tradition for students and families to have their pictures taken with Benny. Finished in 1937, Beneficence was the last commissioned work of sculptor Daniel Chester French, creator of the Abraham Lincoln statue in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.

The complete list of Ball State’s 2023 Top 100 Students can be found on the Foundation’s website.

“We are so grateful for the continued support of the faculty and staff who take the time to nominate these outstanding students,” said Lola Mauer, associate vice president of alumni engagement and strategy at the Foundation. “We also want to thank the students who took the time to complete the application and share the impact they have made during their time at Ball State.”

Ball State announced the creation of its Top 100 Student Awards program last year, resulting in almost 200 nominations for the 2021-22 academic year. This year, the Foundation received nominations from every academic college; the resulting student applications were scored by a select group of 11 University graduates.

The students with the top 50 scores have been invited to attend an awards ceremony on Saturday, March 25, at the Ball State Alumni Center, where the Foundation will announce its Top 25 students for 2023.

The Foundation will also recognize all Top 100 Student Award recipients during One Ball State Day on Wednesday, April 5. This event, which is being held from 3-4 p.m. at the Ball Brothers Foundation Hospitality Suite within Emens Auditorium, will include a casual reception and award pick-up opportunity. Students who earn a Top 100 award also receive a gold tassel to wear at their Commencement ceremony.
