One person killed in crash on I-94

LAPORTE CO.- On Thursday, Feb. 9, at 10:08 p.m., troopers from the Indiana State Police Lowell Post responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash on I-94 eastbound near the 38 mile-marker.

This is approximately two miles west of I-94 Exit 40 to Michigan City and LaPorte.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Kevin Council shows that a 2007 BMW X54 was traveling eastbound on I-94 when the vehicle ran off the roadway for unknown reasons. The BMW then struck the rear of a 2021 Volvo semi-tractor pulling one trailer that was parked on the outside shoulder of the roadway.

The driver of the BMW was declared deceased at the scene by the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office. The driver of the Volvo was uninjured. The right two lanes of I-94 at this location were closed for approximately two and a half-hours for scene investigation and vehicle removal.

The name of the deceased is being withheld until notification to the family can be made.

Assisting at the scene were the following: LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, Coolspring Twp. Fire Department, LaPorte County EMS, LaPorte County Coroner’s Office, Cloverleaf Towing, Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Indiana State Police Lowell Crash Reconstruction Team and other troopers from the Indiana State Police Lowell Post.

The department said there is no further information to release at this time.
