County officials continue to work to keep the county running

BEDFORD – During the Lawrence County Commissioners’ meeting Tuesday morning, several department heads gave updates on their offices’ workings.

County Surveyor Corey Allen requested permission to use $10,000 of his budgeted funds to contract for a section corner perpetuation.

The county surveyors of Indiana, as required by Indiana law (Chapter 319, Acts of 1965) are responsible for checking, establishing, or reestablishing, referencing, preparing, and maintaining records of the original government survey corners used in describing the property. Many of the corners mark the alinement of county roads, city streets, and highways and most are buried beneath the surface of these roads, streets, and highways.

Auditor Jessica Staggs

Auditor Jessica Staggs requested permission to hire a new chief deputy. She requested to hire former Bedford City Clerk-Treasurer Marsha Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer’s last day as Bedford City Clerk/Treasurer is February 1, she resigned from her position in early January.

The request was approved. Staggs needed the commissioners’ permission to hire Pfeiffer because she was starting her salary at a higher rate due to Pfeiffer’s experience. Pfeiffer will receive pay five years pay scale which would require an additional appropriation of $1,840 to the Lawrence County Auditor’s budget.

County Highway Superintendent Brandi Webb

Highway Department Superintendent, Brandi Webb, who was not present at the meeting notified the commissioners that highway crews continue to cut brush and patch potholes They are also keeping the county roads cleared during snow and ice incidents.

Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer

Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer reported she continues to work on the county’s hazard mitigation plan. The plan is almost complete and a public comment session will be held on the plan soon.

The commissioners also approved a contract with Spring Valley Landscape LLC to again this year to tend to the courthouse flower gardens. The contract will be paid in two installments of $3,061.30.
