Firefighters quickly extinguish a semi-trailer fire at the transfer station

BEDFORD – Firefighters from Lawrence County Fire Territory, Marion Township, and Oolitic Volunteer Fire Departments responded to a fire at the Lawrence County Transfer station on SandPit Road Tuesday afternoon.

The fire was contained to a semi-trailer.

The fire started in a trailer that was taken to the transfer station from CAP Group and was inside the building when the fire started. Once the fire was noticed, the trailer was quickly removed from the building.

It took firefighters less than 30 minutes to extinguish the fire.

According to Valarie Luchuaer, Lawrence County Emergency Management Director, the trailer contained metal shavings and paper filters.

Firefighters used a load of sand as a dike to prevent the more than 3,500 gallons of water used water from contaminating the ground soil. Due to the amount of water, the chemicals in the waste material were diluted to safe levels. But as a precautionary measure, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management was contacted.
