Oolitic Volunteer Fire Department offers safety tips for the holiday season

OOLITIC – With the winter chill setting in, and the need to warm up your homes this Christmas season, the Oolitic Volunteer Fire Department shared tips on staying safe through the winter.

  • Do not use extension cords on heaters. When using a space heater, leave a three-foot clearance on them.
  • Do not burn candles. In the excitement of unwrapping, paper can get on one and start a fire. Curtains and other flammable items can get on them and spread fast.
  • If you have a natural tree, water it daily, they are drying out as you read this. If you touch the tree and the needles start to fall off it is dry and a fire hazard.
  • Unplug your lights, heaters and anything else you can every night.

It is important to stay safe this holiday season, and the Oolitic Volunteer Fire Department, as well as other local departments, hope to not visit your home this year.
