Neighbor’s quick action saves a Brownstown woman and her grandchildren from a burning home

BROWNSTOWN – Firefighters with Brownstown, Driftwood, Hamilton, and Carr Townships Volunteer Fire Department battled a house fire at 1252 South County Road 150 West on Thanksgiving night.

Firefighters responded to the blaze just before 7 p.m.

The homeowner Barbara Stout and two of her grandchildren were able to escape the fire uninjured thanks to a neighbor who noticed the fire and began banging on the door. There were smoke detectors in the home but they didn’t go off.

Brownstown Fire Chief Travis McElfresh said the fire started in a heat pump outside the one-story home and traveled up the wall into the attic.

Firefighters had to haul water from a hydrant at US 50 and State Road 135, a couple of miles away to the fire scene.

The fire destroyed the home and its contents, but firefighters were able to save a lot of Stout’s valuables.
