Man discharges a gun toward his neighbor and has three-and-a-half hour standoff with police

 COLUMBUS – A 74-year-old Columbus man was arrested following a three-and-a-half hour standoff on Thanksgiving evening after he supposedly fired a shot at his neighbor, the Columbus Police Department said.

Columbus police were called to the 6500 block of West State Road 46 at about 7:15 p.m. Thursday evening after a report of shots being fired.

According to police, 74-year-old Jerry L. Lucas of Columbus fired a gun at his neighbor. Police say the victim was injured from shrapnel.

Lucas then barricaded himself inside his home prior to police arriving on the scene and refused to exit the home when police arrived.

The Columbus and Bartholomew County SWAT team was called to the scene along with crisis negotiators.

Lucas finally surrendered and was detained on a charge of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon around 10:50 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation and additional charges may be filed, according to police.
