Partnership on Giving Tuesday supports global generosity

BLOOMINGTON – WFIU Public Radio, IU Credit Union, and Beacon are partnering to help give back to the Bloomington community this Giving Tuesday, November 29. Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement that was created in 2012 to encourage people to do good.

Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

For every contribution that WFIU receives on Giving Tuesday, the IU Credit Union will provide a pair of socks to the Shalom Center, Beacon’s day shelter in Bloomington.

Rev. Forrest Gilmore

“The single most requested item from people without homes when they first enter our shelter is a warm, dry pair of socks,” said Rev. Forrest Gilmore, executive director of Beacon. “When you lose your home, you often lose just about everything else, too. Lifting people up by helping them with the basics like food, shelter, and clothing is the first step in the journey back home. This Giving Tuesday partnership with IU Credit Union and WFIU will help make that first step a gentle one.”

WFIU station operations director John Bailey says that Giving Tuesday is a time to celebrate the good that all public service organizations, including public radio stations and organizations like Beacon, do on an
everyday basis.

John Bailey

“Thanks to IU Credit Union’s generosity, we can share the spotlight. WFIU listeners not only will be able to strengthen the essential news and music they rely on but also do a little extra in support of Beacon, which offers so much to the most vulnerable people in our community,” Bailey said.

WFIU’s goal is to raise $25,000 on Giving Tuesday, which would equal nearly 170 pairs of socks to be provided to Beacon by the IU Credit Union.

“IU Credit Union values serving our community in ways that make a positive and lasting impact,” said Karen Earley-Mullis, IU Credit Union marketing manager. “We’re proud to partner with WFIU and
Beacon to provide warm, essential items to people in need in our community.”
