Bedford man arrested on a battery charge after an argument allegedly turns physical

BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested Sunday on a warrant for battery resulting in bodily injury.

According to a probable cause affidavit on October 13, 2022, a woman went to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department to report that at approximately 5 p.m. she was in the vicinity of H&R Block on 16th Street when she was approached by her ex-boyfriend 52-year-old Toby Box, of Bedford. The woman told police Box began harassing her and calling her names.

He then allegedly took the woman’s phone and took off in his vehicle. The woman said she followed Box home. When she got there she claims Box allegedly grabbed her with his right hand around her throat. He then allegedly slammed her head against a door in his garage breaking out a window and said he was going to hurt her.

She told police she managed to get away and get to her car. Box then allegedly grabbed the driver’s side door and was holding it open preventing her from leaving. She told the officer she managed to get the door closed and left his home. The woman then drove to her niece’s house in Orleans where she was advised to go to the hospital.

The woman then went to IU Health Bedford Hospital where she was treated for pain and released. She then went to the Bedford Police Department to report the theft of her phone. She was then told to go to the Sheriff’s Department and report the battery.

Police say the woman had redness and swelling consistent with her head being slammed against a window or door.

The woman signed a battery affidavit.

On Friday, October 14th officers went to Box’s home on US 50 to arrest him but he was not there. The information was then forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office and a warrant was issued for Box’s arrest.
