Bloomington home invasion ends with shots fired

BLOOMINGTON — An attempted home invasion in Bloomington ended with a resident shooting at the invader.

Bloomington officers were called to an apartment on Brandon Court shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday. The 43-year-old resident told police a man tried to open his front door while he was sitting in a recliner with his 4-year-old daughter on his lap. The man’s teenage son and his wife were also in the apartment.

The man then heard someone turn the door handle and then attempt to push the door open – twice.

The resident opened the door and saw a man he had never seen before.

That man was later identified by police as 28-year-old Anthony Lady.

The resident told police Lady asked him for a cigarette, but he told him no and to leave his property and closed the door.

Being concerned for his family’s safety the man retrieved his handgun. He then looked outside his window and Lady was still standing on his front porch. The resident opened the door and again told Lady to leave. The resident told the police Lady “just stood there” and told the resident “to mind his own business”.

That is when the resident fired one shot into the ground. The resident told police Lady began walking toward him and he fired a second shot.

When police arrived they found Lady in a wooded area near South Henderson Street and he was detained.

Lady told police he didn’t know anyone who lived in the apartments but he was just attempting to ask residents for a cigarette. He said he didn’t attempt to force any doors open but he may have hit the door handle.

Other residents in the apartment complex told police they witnessed Lady knock on several apartment doors and look into windows.

Lady was arrested on a charge of residential entry.
