I-69 Finish Line project announces new bridge now open

INDIANA – The new Southport Road bridge over the future I-69 is now open! It is one of the largest bridges on the I-69 Finish Line project.

This short video from earlier this year shows cranes lifting large concrete bridge beams into place, each weighing about 40 tons.

The new southbound State Road 37 exit ramp to Southport Road has also opened. A pre-existing section of Southport Road and the S.R. 37 traffic signal remain open temporarily, connecting with the new alignment to the east for other traffic movements.

When all the ramps are completed, the new interchange will improve safety and traffic flow for a heavily traveled area. Southport Road is expected to be the ninth stoplight out of 14 removed for through traffic on S.R. 37.

Crews are making progress on the future I-69 section west of the existing S.R. 37/Harding Street. Structural beams were lifted into place last week for a new Epler Avenue overpass. This week, crews expect to begin driving steel pilings into the ground for flyover ramp bridges at the future I-465 interchange.

Ongoing night work to remove the center median barrier between Mann Road and Harding Street is expected to close the left lanes of I-465. Carson Avenue bridge replacement work is not expected to close the nearby I-465 lanes and ramps.

Road crews plan to reopen both lanes of Wicker Road this week and remove the temporary traffic signal following drainage structure installation near S.R. 37.

Ongoing waterline work at the Harding Street and I-465 interchange is expected to end before Thanksgiving.

The northbound S.R. 37 exit ramp to S.R. 144 is now open! The southbound S.R. 37 ramp to S.R. 144 shifted slightly onto new pavement last week.

Stay alert for a variety of work taking place along S.R. 37 including the installation of crushed stone shoulders, fiber optic cables, and fencing.

  • S.R. 37 is now open to four lanes and signed with a 55 mph speed limit between Martinsville and SR 144.
  • Waverly Park Road/Old S.R. 37 traffic was shifted last week and its intersection with Huggin Hollow Road reopened, allowing S.R. 144 roundabout construction to continue.

The actual starting date and duration for work and any closures may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen activities occur.
