Madison woman takes advantage of family member and is arrested on numerous theft-related charges

MADISON – On Thursday, September 15th, a Jefferson County, Indiana woman was arrested on numerous theft-related charges following an Indiana State Police investigation that began in February 2022, after a woman reported a family member had stolen thousands of dollars from her.

The investigation by an Indiana State Police detective revealed that 41-year-old Sherri L. Dorten, of Madison, had been stealing money from a relative over a period of nearly four years.

Evidence indicated that Dorten assumed the identity of the victim where she then obtained a loan and filed bankruptcy in the name of the victim.  She additionally withdrew money from ATMs and wrote checks from the victim’s bank accounts.  In total, Dorten obtained thousands of dollars fraudulently by taking advantage of the family member.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the case was submitted to the Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office for review.  As a result, a warrant was issued for Dorten on charges of defrauding a financial institution, identity deception, theft, and corrupt business influence.

Dorten turned herself over to investigators at the Jefferson County Jail Thursday morning.  She was placed under arrest and incarcerated pending her initial court appearance.
