City of Mitchell discuss 2023 budget during special meeting Monday evening

MITCHELL – The Mitchell City Council conducted the budget hearing for the proposed 2023 budget, which is currently set at $3,459,679, a 24 percent increase from 2022.

In part with the increase, the Council approved an eight percent pay increase for most city employees, with the exception of the Mitchell Police Department officers. Officers will instead receive $8,000 for 2023, with the Police Chief receiving a new salary of $56,900, an increase of $1,900 from 2022.

Continuous issues with fluctuating fuel costs and the price of supplies increased played a huge role in the increase in some departments.

Additionally, the Mitchell Fire Chief’s Salary is determined by the number of runs taken through the year. Currently, the run rate is set at $28 per run, and the amount set aside for the 2023 budget is set near 27 runs for the year or $750, which is up $250 from 2022. The amount set aside can be adjusted if needed with an additional appropriation. The salary set for the two Assistant Fire Chiefs will be set at $8,000 for 2023, an increase of $2,000.

Other areas of interest include the Building Commissioner’s salary, which is set at $40,200, up from $37,400 in 2022, as well as the Mitchell City Cemetery Department head salary, increasing to $33,200, a difference of $2,900 from 2022.

The 2023 budget will be adopted during the October meeting.
