An inmate at Terre Haute federal penitentiary becomes unresponsive and later dies in hospital

TERRE HAUTE – An inmate at the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute died Saturday.

According to a press release, 47-year-old Jonathan Powers was acting odd and was evaluated by medical staff at the prison.

He lost consciousness and became unresponsive. Life-saving measures were attempted by the hospital staff. Powers was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified. No staff or other inmates were injured and at
no time was the public in danger.

Prison officials have not released information on what led up to the inmate’s death.

Powers was serving time for drug charges. He was sentenced in the Southern District of Indiana to a
21-month sentence on a felony charge of possession of a firearm and simple possession of meth.
He had been in custody at Terre Haute since June 7, 2022.
