Bedford Board of Works and Safety vote to demote Police Captain following department regulation violation

BEDFORD – The Bedford Board of Works and Safety met in a special meeting Tuesday morning, to consider the recommendation to demote Police Captain Timothy Chen to Patrol Officer following a department regulation violation.

Bedford Police Chief Terry Moore

Bedford Police Chief Terry Moore shared that on Monday, Jul 18th, 2022, it was found that two defamatory postings were placed on the squad room door on Saturday, July 16th. The postings were not shared during the meeting, however, they broke several department rules and violated regulations.

Chief Moore then directed an internal investigation that determined Chen as the one who placed the postings. Chen was then placed on paid administrative leave on Wednesday, August 10th.

The Board of Works was notified of the suspension on Monday, August 15th during their regular meeting. Following the investigation, a demotion was suggested as the best course of action. Chen was then notified that prior to his demotion going into effect, he would be placed on unpaid leave for five days, which he agreed to.

Following this demotion, the pay for Chen will reflect the Patrol Officer pay grade and not the former Captain’s pay grade. The board approved the request before adjourning.
