IU student found dead in Bloomington home

BLOOMINGTON – Avery R. McMillan, 20, an IU Bloomington student, was found dead in a home Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. in the 4100 block of Arlington Road near State Road 46 and North Maple Grove Road.

Monroe County Sheriff Brad Swain says an autopsy was performed Thursday afternoon. Those results are pending.

McMillan, from Valparaiso, was in a sorority at IU but lived in an off-campus apartment in Bloomington.

When deputies arrived on the scene they found McMillan unresponsive and administered three doses of Narcan but were not able to revive her.

Sheriff Swain said a 33-year-old man, who lives at the home, made the 911 call.

The man, who is cooperating with the investigation, told deputies he had met McMillan Tuesday night near IU’s campus and both went back to his home. He told deputies he found McMillan unconscious Wednesday morning and dialed 911.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is working with Indiana University Police on the investigation.

“Our thoughts go to the family and friends of IU student Avery McMillan,” Chuck Carney, a spokesperson for IU, said in a statement. “At this time, our Division of Students Affairs is reaching out to the campus community to provide services as needed.”
