Monroe County Democratic Party to host Reproductive Justice Town Hall

BLOOMINGTON — With a coalition of pro-choice partners, the Monroe County Democratic Party will host “Resistance After Roe: Where Do We Go From Here?” — the first in a series of Town Hall events — at 4 PM on Sunday, July 10, at the Monroe County Library Auditorium. The event will be recorded by CATS.

This town hall will provide a primer on what we can expect from the Indiana Statehouse on July 25, and a framework for taking action before and after the session. A panel of experts will also discuss the implications for civil liberties and reproductive rights in our community. Attendees will learn how to take action to support reproductive justice, abortion rights, and equality in Indiana.

“So many of our freedoms and constitutional rights are at risk now after the Dobbs decision, from bodily autonomy to the ability to access life-saving healthcare, the right to choose whether and when to have a family, marriage equality, and even the right to travel freely,” said MCDP Vice-Chair Shruti Rana. “We need to mobilize now to protect as many people as we can and lay the groundwork to move forward rather than backward in Indiana.”

Speakers and panelists will include State Senator Shelli Yoder, State Representative Matt Pierce, Candidate for Indiana House District 62 Penny Githens, Candidate for Indiana House District 46 Kurtis Cummings, Candidate for Indiana House District 32 Victoria Garcia Wilburn, former State Senator Vi Simpson, MCDP Vice-Chair Shruti Rana, IU Maurer Professor Jody Madeira, and Women4Change’s Rima Shahid.

“The Supreme Court has moved regulation of women’s health care to the states, and it is our responsibility here in Indiana to do what we can and as much as we can to protect women and girls from radicals in the state legislature,” said Simpson.
