Updated: Inmate dies in Lawrence County Jail

BEDFORD – At 4:15 a.m. this morning, May 10, 2022, a male detainee who was in custody at the Lawrence County Jail was found unresponsive to an apparent suicide.

According to Sheriff Mike Branham, corrections officers promptly started resuscitation procedures, including CPR and AED, and continued until emergency medical personnel arrived at the jail. At that time EMS personnel determined the individual was deceased.

The deceased detainee is identified as Andrew Smith, 49, of Bloomington, Indiana.  Smith was being held on charges of possession of meth, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and theft. He was also wanted on an outstanding warrant in Marion County.

The Lawrence County Coroner’s Office and a detective were assigned to investigate the death.

At this time there is no evidence of foul play.

An autopsy will be conducted later today.

There will be no further comment pending the completion of the investigation.
