Salem man flips car and is injured trying to avoid wood in the roadway

MITCHELL – A Salem man was injured after he crashed his car on State Road 60 East, east of Noe Road Monday afternoon.

According to a Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department police report, Mark Gibson was traveling west-northwest on State Road 60 East, east of Noe Road in a Nissan Versa when he attempted to avoid a piece of wood in the roadway.

Gibson lost control of his car on the wet road, hydroplaned and “fish-tailed” when he tried to avoid the piece of wood.

The vehicle went off the northeast side of the roadway and crossed a driveway, collided with a mailbox, and then continued traveling off-road along the ditch.

The vehicle then struck a small embankment before colliding with a tree.

After striking the tree the vehicle rolled over onto the driver’s side door and then continued to roll stopping inverted on its top.

An IU LifeLine ambulance and Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.

Gibson suffered a laceration on his head and was picked up at the scene by his wife. It is unclear if he was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
