Failure to yield injures two in Washington County accident

WASHINGTON COUNTY – Tuesday morning Washington County Sheriffs Deputies and emergency response personnel were dispatched to the area of State Road 56 East and Fire Tower Road, about a motor vehicle accident involving injuries.

Evidence at the scene and witness statements indicated that a 2005 Chevrolet truck was traveling west on State Road 56 east, while a 2005 Nissan was traveling south, on Fire Tower Road. The driver of the Nissan failed to yield the right of way at the intersection and drove into the path of the Chevrolet truck.

The driver of the Chevrolet truck identified as 62-year-old Scott Applegate of Pekin, was transported by the Washington County Ambulance Service to St. Vincent Hospital in Salem for treatment of his injuries.

The driver of the Nissan, 40-year-old Mark Bense, of Columbus, was transported by the Washington County Ambulance Service to University of Louisville Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Bense had to be extricated from his vehicle due to the damage sustained in the accident.

Deputies were assisted by Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department, Salem Fire Department, the Washington County Ambulance Service, and Process Server Mark Blackman.

The crash is still under investigation.
