Obituary: Donald Richard “Dick” Johnson


April 29, 1939 – March 21, 2022

On Monday, March 21, 2022, Donald Richard “Dick” Johnson, loving husband and father of three sons, peacefully entered his eternal life at age 82.

Born on April 29, 1939, in Shoals, Indiana to Neal and Josephine (Stone) Johnson, Dick graduated from Shoals High School in 1958, where he was a member of the Jug Rox basketball team. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy and served for 9 years, stationed in Pensacola, FL, Bainbridge, MD, Norfolk, VA, and Lafayette, LA. On April 23, 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Judith Anne Cropp. When he was discharged from the Navy, he worked at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Crane, retiring in 1994.

He was best known for his kind and gentle soul and love for his family.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Carroll and Kenny. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Judy; his three sons, Greg (Marcy) Johnson, Kansas City, Missouri, Jim (Susan) Johnson, Bedford Indiana, Brent (Dezarae) Johnson, Vincennes, Indiana; four grandchildren, Morgan (YS Blake) Philips, Mission Kansas, Abbey Johnson, Kansas City, Missouri, Karlie (Daniel) Dreiman, Vincennes, Indiana, Nick Johnson, Craggy Wash, Arizona; and great-grandchildren, Ashlyn and Grayson “GR” Dreiman. He is also survived by two brothers, Johnny and Mike; and four sisters, Mary Jo, Nina, Sally, and Cindy; and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, March 24th at 11:30 am at the First United Methodist
Church, 1409 K Street, Bedford, Indiana.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Bedford.
