Lions Club members provide vision screening tests to Lawrence County Independent School students Thursday

FAYETTEVILLE – Members from the Bedford, Fayetteville and Mitchell Lions Clubs stopped by Lawrence County Independent Schools to provide vision screening for all students enrolled at the school Thursday morning.

As required by the State of Indiana, students in Kindergarten, First, Third, Fifth, and Eighth grades are required to have these tests done via the School Health Report which is due by June 15 of each school year.

The Lions Club has offered this service to the former Fayetteville Elementary School since the formation of the Fayetteville Club in 2009 and has offered to continue providing this service for the LCIS students at no cost to the families involved.

Fayetteville Lions Club member Duane Terry said it is the least the clubs can do for the students and families.

“This is for the kids. You have students in Kindergarten and First grade who don’t typically know that they have good or bad vision, and being able to provide these machines makes a big difference,” said Terry. “Previously, this was performed by the nurses of the school, and it could take upward of the entire school year to get these tests completed by the deadline, so we offer this as a community service to the school, to speed the process up a bit.”

The school currently has 297 students enrolled at the school, and the Lions Club members remained on-site until each student was offered the opportunity to take the vision test at the school.
