Firefighters put out woods fire on Meridian Road

MITCHELL – Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department firefighters were called to battle a woods fire Friday at 2:08 p.m. at 1680 block of Meridian Road.

When firefighters arrived they found approximately one to two acres burning.

According to Marion Township VFD Chief Paul Gillespie, crews immediately began to attack the main body of the fire which was moving towards the woods.

Shawswick VFD was requested to respond with manpower and its tanker truck.

“The wind shifted and the fire started moving towards a barn. Crews redeployed to protect the structure preventing damage to the structure,” Chief Gillespie added. “After the fire was out crews found that the fire had started from a trash pile that was being burnt off. The trash pile was not being watched by the landowner.”
